Cometa 300
(Nickel) |
This is a medium weight, full sized, full legal power spring airgun made by the Spanish company Cometa. It would be classed as a budget/ mid range hunting/ plinking rifle. Sitting between the 220 and the 400 fenix rifle, the Cometa 300 is of good finish. The nickel version looks great, the whole action being silver nickel plate, with a black (painted beech) stock.
This is an adult gun and the action is reasonably hard to cock, if you are shooting many rounds, this would make it a difficult gun to use for a child/ small female (no sexism intended)
STOCK:
Ambidextrous, but small cheekpiece for right handed users. Finish is smooth, no chequering, but reasonable varnishing/ painting (nickel version). Comfortable rubber end piece/ buffer.
ACTION:
Reasonable finish, barrel well fitted, no slack or movement. After 500 shots, no problems with action working loose. Foresight can be removed for fitting silencer/ moderator if needed (Got a U.K. Neil custom chrome one for mine at 25 pounds, see AIRGUN BBS website), but 'universal' style moderator will fit. NOTE barrel diameter is 14.75mm.
TRIGGER:
Mine was a bit slack with about 3mm movement from side to side, trigger worked fine and was smooth, but side to side movement made me think 'Cheap'. When I stripped ths one down, the trigger is a cheap affair, and a couple of thin plastic spacers. either side of the trigger pin, well lubricated, sorted this problem out.
ACCURACY:
I have been firing this rifle now for 6 hours (3x2hour sessions at a range, over 500 shots) and the accuracy is let down by my shooting ability, NOT the rifles accuracy. With a zeroed scope, set at 30 yards, I get sub 1 inch groups, and can hit the head and then centre re-set (both 1 inch targets) field bird targets at my range out to 35 yards consistently, but I'm still improving my aim!. Crosman Accupells seem fine, but a tad expensive. Also tried Milbro select with similar accuracy (SMK spitfires not so good).
SIGHTS/ SCOPE:
Must be honest, but I didn't try out the open sights at all, instead opted for a 4x40 scope(budget) on budget 2 piece mounts. Several hundred shot later I wish I had gone for a 1 piece mount (pay about15-25 quid), as the 2 piece job moves along the rail due to recoil, no matter how tight the screws were. (Have a 1 piece now and its great), also a 4-9x40 scope would have been better as x4 is not really enough power, targets out past 30 yards are VERY small at 4x. |

| Cometa 300 |
Reasonable standard of finish, feels like a purposeful rifle. Easy to break Barrel for cocking - trigger has 3-4 mm of lateral movement (does not effect pull). Initially a lot of dieseling. This settles after about 80 - 100 pellets. Rifle does not seem to be pellet fussy. Able to get good one inch groups at 25 yards. Due to weight of rifle recoil is very minimal. Open sights are excellent, easy to adjust. Safety catch well positioned and can be disengaged with out altering aim. Rated as full power (12ft lbs) suitable for hunting, head shots should not be a problem due to grouping consistency.
The main point to consider would probably be if you wanted a silencer or not as they only come as factory fitted. The action is moderately loud so silencer benefits may be negligible. Definitely good value for money as at the moment the rifles performance is greater than my ability. I am going hunting in a few weeks will let you all know how it performs in the field.
As always! product backed up with rapid delivery and support. |

| Walther CP99 Compact Blowback CO2 Pistol |
The box says: "As Real As It Gets", and they sure aren't lying here. The blowback feature ALONE is worth the price. The only "odd" thing is that the ejection port (on the real gun) is molded into the slide assembly. No big deal. The weight of the pistol is actually a tad HEAVIER than the real Walther.
As for accuracy...well at 5-10 metres, you can get nice tight patterns, clip after clip. HI-VIS dots on the sights would have been a nice touch, though. The muzzle velocity is only a (mere) 330 FPS, but that's more than enough to carve a nice hole through the local phone directory backstop.
You wind up getting about EIGHT clips of BBs (18 shots per) through the pistol, before the power "drop-off" begins, signalling another CO2 "cart" is required, but be advised that having a COLD cartridge (by rapid firing) will most assuredly decrease the number of BBs through the pistol before another is needed. Best to keep them at room temperature.
